This was really just a collection of a bunch of demos that we did shortly after we started playing as a band. We were so excited about the songs and our friends were pushing us to release something that we did after only 6 months of being together. We then took the original demo mixes and embelished them at Radio Monash through the recording desk they had there and via a DAT tape.
Both Shoeshine and Give You What You Need recieved instant airplay on PBS and Triple R in Melbourne and Million Times got some spins on a punk and rock radio show in England via a fan of ours who hosted Bunk Radio internet radio station in Aus.
It had 8 tracks so we called it a mini album but it also had a hidden track on it about 5 minutes after the end of the last song. In hindsight it probably should have been about 10 seconds. I got a few calls from friends who freaked out when they had put the CD on and forgot to hit stop at the end only to be assulted by our little punk ditty, Movies, a short time later.
It was launched at The Hi-Fi bar to a full house!
The artwork is probably my favourite of all our covers. It captures so much in one image. The band itself was only supposed to be a 6 month band that would conquer Melbourne, two fingers up to bands who were "serious" musos and thought that fame was within their grasp. The cover art reflected all of that in that it was an image of a heap of promotional material that record stores would normally have to promote an album, thrown amongst the rubbish in an alleyway. This all was supposed to represent how fleeting fame was as well and how you could be the bigest thing one minute and trash the next. It also represented the 6 month band in that at the end of 6 months we were supposed to end and thus all the Johnny Rock and The Limits promo material thrown in the trash. If you loook closely you can also see my white suit that I used to wear at all the shows with my white rimmed rayband sticking out of the pocket. If you look even harder you can see posters for our upcoming Hi-Fi bar launch of the CD, and if you look super hard you will see me as a ghostly figure walking out of the frame. That also represented fading rock stars and fame that was nothing more than thin air. Also the fact that I had shed my white suit fitted with the end of the 6month band. Though in reality this was just the beginning of our adventures.
We had all the promo material printed up by our mate Chris at his work. He took the photo with help from his girlfriend (now wife), Lauren. We set it up in AC/DC lane just in front of Cherry Bar and cause we had to do it out of work hours we were losing the light by the time we got there. To combat this we came prepared and brought a few torches. With a long exposure time on the camera Lauren was able to flash the torches at just the right moment when I walked past so we could get the ghostly figure and the trash all lit up at the same time. No post production at all from memory. Just one great shot! For the back cover we got a shot of some sneakers hanging on the power lines above us in the alley. Seemed fitting since our lead single was Shoeshine.
